Celebrating World Book Day

As its world book day we thought it would be nice to share with you what books the Solo Sports team remember as one their first as an inspiration to start reading..

Debbie – The 39 Steps by John Buchan

“The 39 Steps was the first adult book read to me in
primary school by an inspirational teacher. My love
of reading grew from there”

Kayley – Goodnight Mister Tom by Michelle Magorian

“In primary school, our teacher gave each student a book
for their birthday to help them get into reading. Each person
got a different book based on what the teacher thought we
would enjoy. Goodnight Mister Tom was the first real book I
read and is still one of my favourites”

John – Fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl

“When it came to reading time I always went
straight for this book  because I knew it would
only take me 15 minutes to read”

Bronte – Eragon by Christopher Paolini

Whilst I was in Primary school I was encouraged to read this
by my mum, who had read it before me. I’m a dragon lover and
I believe that her choice in books is the reason I enjoy burying
myself in worlds of fantastic beasts and magic to this day.

Richard – The Famous Five by Enid Blyton

The first books I remember reading were The Famous 5
books. They created a level of adventure and escapism
for a young boy growing up in an inner city installing a
great impression of right over wrong and the idea that
kids can make a difference.

 Michael – The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien

First read The Hobbit at school, this was the book that
inspired me to read long stories as against short.

Tina – Little Women by Louisa M Alcott

Im not a big reader but this one sticks in
my mind, as it proved that women could
have their own mind and individual identity.

Garry – Marvin wanted more! by Joseph Theobald

All the books I seemed to have to read as a kid where
pretty uninspiring….. But I was inspired reading to my girls
when they were young and one of our favourites was
Marvin the Sheep, Marvin wanted More! Marvin was the
smallest sheep that wanted to be bigger like the other sheep so
then started to eat more and more. Hence he got bigger and
bigger but was never satisfied, until there was nothing else
to eat in the world except the world. To which he ate the world
but then couldn’t hold it in and threw it up thankfully!
A great little story about the effects of taking things a little bit too far!!

Allan- Thomas the Tank Engine by The Reverend W Awdry

I can remember reading it as Thomas was blue and was
my favourite colour, the book size was small and easy to hold
& read AND I had a Thomas the Tank Engine toy.
Later, as a dad, I loved reading these books to my children .
